The Homesteading RD
США
Добавлен 9 май 2022
We started homesteading in 2013 on 5 acres, but now we're starting our NEW homestead from scratch in the north woods of Minnesota on 240 acres. We're currently living in a 960 sq foot hunting cabin and are doing our best to live off our land - gardening, raising chickens, hunting, and foraging. We'll build our forever home, someday! We'll see :) Come along for the journey and learn some self-sufficiency tips along the way!
Tour My 4 Chicken Coops & See How to Introduce New Chicks to the Flock!
We've been raising chickens for 10 years and it's time to do a GRAND tour of my 4 coops! We have our main coop, a chicken tractor for teenage layer chicks, a chicken tractor for meat chickens, and a double brooder for baby chicks. Come check them out! I'll also share my best tips for introducing new chicks to an adult flock, and how to manage broody hens. Let's go!

Great setup for birds
Very nice !
OMG FOR REAL? Practically free!
Marigolds everywhere on my property. Ten plants give you about a million seeds for next year😅
Wow! Where do you live?

Awesome
Would the essential oils Rosemary or Thyme work? My daughter had a plant in our yard that was covered in bugs, she sprayed my botanical disinfectant on it and they all disappeared! 😊
❤❤❤❤❤ Hello beautiful girl 🖐️🖐️
My mother told me that years ago granny boiled an egg for my grandad, he cracked it open and there was a chick in it 😭😭
Funny story. My sister in law was over and i gave her some eggs, dont know what way the conversation went but she asked will i get any chicks. I said no as i dont have a rooster. She asked "oh do you need a rooster"? I burst out laughing and said well does a woman need a man to have a baby 😂 oh how we laughed
Hey, someone closer to my zone in Northern WI. I am fighting with all the gardening this year. It's been a sloooow start. Last year, I was so much farther ahead. It has been nice not to have to water so much this year with all the rain, but the flooding and standing water is not helping with mosquitos. So much bug spay ans layers of cloths to try and ward them off.
Awesome tour!!!
did it work??
Bug free.
Great video. Thanks for all the tips. I have a question about the red rangers. I was advised to get Cornish cross meat chickens because they taste better than the red rangers. Have you noticed a big difference in taste?? I would like to get away from the Cornish cross.
Oh gosh - I couldn’t disagree with that more!! The rangers have far superior taste, texture, color and nutrition compared to the bland and lifeless Cornish cross. Definitely give them a try and enjoy chicken that actually tastes like chicken! 🫶🏼
@@thehomesteadingrd thanks for the response. I did get 3 red rangers this year to try out. Frankly the Cornish cross creep me out because of how fast they grow.
@@TheEssentialRanchersLife Totally agree - they freak me out, too. I've never raised them and don't plan to.
The purple peppers are so fun! That variety grows very well too!
Yay!! Can’t wait to try them!!

Hi
Where does anyone get grape or oak leaves?? I use bay leaves
Idk what I did wrong with this recipe… I followed all the directions. After four days in the cupboard I placed in the fridge. 24 hours later I tried tasting them and they were mushy and terribly salty.
💚👍lookin good!!
Thank you!!!!
Do you think it would be more advantageous to keep your garden, covered in a large greenhouse?
Every carnivore likes to eat chickens: foxes, coyotes , raccoons, wolves, bobcats and on and on!
The portable coop is great!
Thank you!
Yay! Garden looks great! Fellow Minnesotan here!! So glad i found your channel, helps me keep healthy expectations ( and hope) for my garden. Keep it coming, love the content..
Hey there neighbor!! I’m glad you found me 🫶🏼
Great job!
Thank you for sharing ❤
Hi, do you use the automatic sunrise/sunset setting on your ChickCozy opener or do you use the timer? I’m having trouble with automatic opening with a covered run, not enough light for the sensor. Thanks!
Great question! I don’t use the light sensor because, I agree, there’s not enough light because of the covered run. I use the manual time setting and just adjust it monthly based on daylight hours
@@thehomesteadingrd thank you very much! I will try setting the time manually.
Minnesota 4B here! I’m having nearly the same struggles and successes :) glad to know I’m not alone. Thank you for your videos! Keep them coming ❤
Hang in there!! ❤️❤️
Love your video 🥰... thanks for sharing! New subbie here 😊
Yay! Welcome 🫶🏼!
I have 3 roosters that are just over 7 weeks old. Do I have to introduce them to the rest of my flock (1 roo and 7 hens) at night? Or can I put them together this afternoon so I can watch them? I also have an additional 7 chicks that are 3.5 weeks old. Should I wait a couple of weeks to throw them in with the rest? Currently everyone is outside in separate coops/runs but all can see each other. Thanks for a great video!
I’ve done it both ways, but I feel like dusk is best. that way you can supervise for 30 min or so and then everyone goes to bed. Then, run back out at sunrise. I would wait on the 3.5 week olds. Good luck!
I’m just curious what your reasoning is to prune the lower suckers. Will they not produce fruit? I usually plant indeterminate tomatoes and I planted a bunch of romas this year so I’m just trying to figure it out 😊
Good morning from Forest lake Minnesota! Great episode Katie!!
Good morning!! Thank you!!
If I do chicken soup does it still count as a bone broth ?
You could have maybe moved the few new breed buff layer chicks in with one of the broody hens to have them raise them up the rest of the way. Just a thought, always love seeing chicks with a mama teaching them!
That would have worked when they were a day old, but they were 2-3 weeks old here so the broody hens wouldn’t have taken them 😕. If these hens were broody 2-3 weeks ago, I absolutely would have done it!
We just purchased the predator deterrent eyes! So far so good!
Hooray!! They are awesome!!
